What people say about Shine

I can’t believe how much I learned over such a short period of time - the training was both rigorous and supportive. I NEVER would have considered speaking publicly if it weren’t for shine, but now I’m excited and ready for it.”

—  Lisa Pierson |  Copywriting consultant + mom of two daughters.

After Shine, Lisa secured speaking slots at Interact Ohio, Digital Growth Unleashed, Call To Action Conference and INBOUND.

FAQs

How do I get into Shine Accelerator? Do I need to apply?

The Shine Accelerator is super intimate with hands-on 1-on-1 and small group coaching. In order to be considered, you’ll need to fill out our application form (including 2-minute video) and satisfy the following criteria: -You have a compelling story to share and/or something valuable to teach -You are ready to hit large-scale conferences -You have already done some some speaking -You have a wish-list of conferences you want to speak at -You plan to pitch yourself -You are ready to book more speaking engagements to grow your career, business, and platform -You welcome critical feedback and are prepared to work through the messy stuff to experience breakthroughs We evaluate applications based on the above criteria as well as the effort and enthusiasm demonstrated.

What is the time commitment required?

Expect to spend between 6 and 8 hours per week on Shine - including attending 1-on-1 and group coaching sessions, reviewing complementary course materials, and developing your talk and slide deck.

What is the curriculum like?

Our curriculum is a blended model which consists of 1-on-1 and group coaching, self-paced coursework and simulated learning experiences such as the Speaker Showcase. You'll be divided into small groups and assigned a pro speaker coach who you’ll meet with 6 times leading up to the Speaker Showcase - this means built-in community and accountability. You’ll also get instant access to all Shine course materials including video content, exercises, and assignments to prepare you to present at the Speaker Showcase. These course materials are supplementary but go deep into a number of topics you may wish to expand upon, such as storyboarding your talk, anchoring your talk in evidence, or even setting up your at-home presentation space. It's likely you will go through several iterations of your talk as you receive and integrate feedback from your coach and peers. This is all part of the experience and results in a high-quality talk which past mentees have used to pitch and secure speaking engagements. Our program culminates in the Speaker Showcase - a conference featuring you, and we often have conference and events organizers in attendance. Your final presentation will be recorded and edited.

When will coaching sessions happen?

You will have a total of 6 coaching sessions (roughly 1 per week), including 1-on-1 and small group sessions. Your first group session kicks off on September 22nd, 2021 at 5 pm in PST, EST or BST timezones (you'll let us know which timezone you prefer). Your 1-on-1 coaching sessions will be on either Wednesday or Thursday, which you will schedule directly with your coach.

What other dates and deadlines do I need to be aware of?

-July 30, 2021: Applications close -August 6, 2021: Cohort is finalized; expect to hear back from us within 1 week of this date -August 25, 2021: You’ll receive your orientation package and be invited to the Shine Slack -September 20, 2021: Shine officially kicks off with a mandatory kickoff call (This is when you’ll meet your coach and get to know your cohort a little bit.) -September 22 - October 30: Join weekly calls with your coach, make your way through course materials, and build your talk -October 15, 2021: Submit your final talk title, description, and bio for the conference website -October 22, 2021: Dress rehearsal with your coach and mini group -October 25 - October 27: Show up ready to present your final talk at the Shine Speaker Showcase (And cheer on your fellow cohort as they present their talks too!) -October 28, 2021: Graduation celebration

Who will my coach be? Do I get to choose? If not, how do you decide?

We do our best to pair mentees with the coach we believe will best support them based on expertise, perceived learning styles, and desired outcomes. Because we run Shine online and therefore worldwide, time zones will also be a contributing factor to mentee-coach pairing. Finally, we want to ensure you feel supported and safe, so you will have the opportunity in your application to indicate whether you are comfortable working with a man as well as if you would prefer a BIPOC coach. If you are unhappy with your coach pairing, please get in touch with us at hello@shinebootcamp.com and we will work with you to find a solution.

What if I can’t make a coaching session or the kickoff call?

Please do your best to show up to all coaching sessions and the kickoff call as these live sessions are an invaluable part of the program and core to your success. If you are unable to attend, please let us know and your coach know so they can account for your absence. We will be in touch with coaches regularly to follow up on each mentees’ progress. Live coaching calls will not be recorded.

How does this program work across multiple time zones?

You will be assigned to a coach along with 5 of your peers to create a mini-group. You’ll work closely with this mini-group over the 6 weeks as you refine your talk. Mini-groups are created primarily by time zone to make real-time group work and coaching more convenient (however, we can take into consideration other factors such as preference and areas of expertise). We hire coaches to accommodate PST, EST and GMT time zones, however, you do not need to be in these time zones to participate; we will place you in a group which is closest to your time zone. We do our best to group you in cohorts that are close to your timezone, but with numbers, we cannot guarantee it. We will contact you in advance to make sure the schedule works for you. In the past, we've had mentees do Shine from places like Spain, Austria, Singapore, Nicaragua, Panama, and Taipei. Mentees have found that the timing has worked out well by planning ahead and blocking time in their calendars. If you're in Australia, New Zealand, or in an Asia Pacific region, you will have a slightly different schedule so that you can work in step with your global classmates. If you fall in this category, we'll check in with you to see if the schedule works for you. Again, past mentees have found that the timing has worked out well by planning ahead and time-blocking in their calendars.

What tools will we use?

Zoom (video conferencing) for all coaching calls. Thinkific (course platform) to watch the video lessons. Free Slack (instant messaging) to connect with your peers in a private forum. Google Calendar for all event details and links. Google Drive, Google Forms, and Notion for all administrative details. Bevy for the Speaker Showcase.

If I’m not accepted, can I apply again?

Yes! Please apply again. If it didn't work out this time, there is always next time. And we really, truly mean that. We’ve accepted a number of applicants who didn't get in their first try.

I’d like my work to pay for this. Do you have any materials to help me secure professional development budget?

Here's a resource to help you pitch your company and/or boss. We recognize that asking for pro-d funds can be a big challenge in and of itself, so let us know how else we might help you by sending an email to hello@shinebootcamp.com. We're pretty convincing and have helped people advocate for themselves in the past :)

What if I have a job, a family or other time commitments?

Most of our mentees have full-time jobs or busy freelance schedules. We’ve created an intensive timeline that is designed to stretch you - but it will still be manageable given your real-life responsibilities.

What is the cost?

The price for the full 6-week program - which includes coaching, course content, access to the Shine community, resources, a slot at the Speaker Showcase, a recording of your talk, and more - is $1650USD. There are no hidden fees, add-ons, or other surprises. Advisors, peers, and alum have told us this is priced low, but we want to make it accessible given our mission. Should you be accepted, we'll send you a link to register where you'll be asked to pay.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we do! We have two payment plan options: 2 monthly installments of $825 or 3 monthly instalments of $550 USD.

Do you offer bursaries or scholarships?

YES! We believe speaking should be accessible to everyone. As such, we offer dozens of scholarships for those with financial need (Preference given to BIPOC, Trans, and otherwise marginalized individuals). If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please fill out the application form at www.shinebootcamp.com/bursary and be sure to select "Accelerator" as the program you are applying for.

Do you offer refunds?

Because we hire coaches based on the exact number of mentees, and because you get instant and lifetime access to course materials, all Accelerator registration fees are non-refundable.

When does your next program open?

We run our speaker accelerator program a few times per year. The truth is: we put so much energy and heart into running Shine. It's not just a course with some pre-recorded videos - it's a course, coaching, group workshopping, community. Not to mention a weeklong Speaker Showcase. We won't run another program until early 2022. The best way to know when we launch is by signing up for our email list (we only email you when our programs open and close). And by following us on Instagram and Twitter.
